Sure, this is an interesting and entertaining story. I couldn’t tell where fact ended and fiction began. I was disappointed, being someone who has been both in front of and behind the camera in the adult film world, because it read more like a Hollywood-style script proposal. Again, I did like the book, but it was a big let down because it read like every other book written about this industry as it played to all the “hot buttons” and stereotypes. I was surprised by a little-know book titled Cut Throat Business because it depicts the real inner workings of this industry. So if you by this book, I also recommend that you by the other too, you won’t be disappointed and you’ll get a broader picture of this intriguing industry.

Well, let me start from the fact that I’m not an American citizen, I live in Russia. With the wide spread of the Internet acquiring classic movies became an easy thing to do if you really wish to. After getting some of them in AVI form I started purchasing official DVDs, discovered favorite actors and actresses (for instance, Jerry Butler, John Leslie, Ron Jeremy, one and only Lisa DeLeeuw, Christy Canyon, Desiree Cousteau) – and finally found out that some of those people came around to write memoirs about their life. For starters, to me adult videos of the Golden Age are not just sex films as they are – women there look natural (no silicone queens), movies have interesting plots, and actors don’t stare into the camera every 5 seconds. So here started the reading. Some books turned out to be informative, some extremely boring dealing with unsolved parental/personal issues. But this particular book stands out to me. The narration actually is so boring that I could have put it down after 10 pages – BUT I read this book to the very end for educational issues. First, there’s still a bit of information on women from the glory days of the 70ies and 80ies Golden Age of Porn – here finally I found the proof that Lisa DeLeeuw never died of AIDS or drugs and probably hid herself well enough like infamous Bambi Woods (“Debbie Does Dallas”) did years before. Second – and most important – for a non-American English-learning person the book is great as it is full of so-called ‘American slang’, i.e. idiomatic expressions, which are very helpful for my personal wide knowledge of specific stylized English. Still the book content itself is mostly unworthy from the historical point of view.

I do not understand why this book is not being given more 5 star reviews. I was captivated from the first page finally a book about the x industry from someone who is not an actor or actress bitching about how terrible it is to be a porn star. Mr. Jennings lived it all and tells it like it is.I highlu recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the x rated industry.

For such an interesting subject, Mr. David Jennings makes it seem sooooo boring. Researching the sex industry, the book is helpful in establishing a historical time line. I found myself reading though the text thinking, “There are other things I could be doing.” I was not drawn in at all.
I will rate it moderately because I received this book along with another book on the same subject that I found almost addictive. Where I could put down Mr. Jennings book, I could not put down the other. Although I finished reading both books yesterday, I have not thought about Skinflicks on an intellectual level.

David Jennings has written about his personal experiences in the porn business and he has done it in a candid and honest way. It’s an inside story for sure but it lacks perspective and scope. Now compared to the books that all those porn stars have offered up, this is a treasure.
Today’s porn industry is centered in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. It’s out in the open, corporate, big multi billion dollar business complete with expo’s and it’s own award shows. But in the 1970′s and early 80′s, San Francisco was its home. “The Golden Era” when porn was shot on film away from the seething eyes of the Los Angeles Police Department and promotion seeking district attorneys. The porn producers found refuge in the city by the bay. Porn performers left more than their hearts in San Francisco, because who knew that a basic cottage industry would grow to the size where it annually out grosses Hollywood itself. The book details the period of transition when video was just being discovered as a cheaper and faster way to shoot these flesh epics. Jennings was a cameraman who at first just wanted to research the business, ended up being seduced by it. He speaks of the people he worked with and those he befriended like Juliet “Aunt Peg” Anderson. Having recently met Juliet myself, I can tell you the book is well worth it just for what he saids about her.
Again, this book is only from the author’s perspective but it is enjoyable if you already have some knowledge of the porn industry and of course for research purposes only, want to know just a bit more!
