The Bondage Master is an uneven mixture of BDSM, comedy and adventure.
The description on the DVD case does not indicate any comedy whatsoever.
With that made clear, it is not a bad film if you can take the overwrought silliness of the comedic elements. It does have several very nice scenes of Japanese ropework. The stand out is the gentle presentation of the ‘romance of the rope’ to an inexperienced young woman. This was done quite nicely and seriously. The acting is decent enough. While I did not like a lot of the sillier comedy, some of the
jokes were very cute. I loved the martial arts use of the rope by the main character when fighting his enemies. The homeopathic use of rope bondage was also very cute. I like and really appreciate that the subjects of BDSM and those who practice it are treated with dignity.
The viewing quality of the Asian Pulp Cinema DVD release is quite good.
If the subjects of BDSM and Japanese rope work(shibari)are to your liking (and don’t mind a lot of comedy mixed in), you would probably enjoy the film.

avoid this film like the plague – obviously a cash-in …. to scam some moolah from fans of Japanese cinema that are interested in Shibari – there’s a tripe plot that’s more puerile than pulp and only a few very short scenes with any ropework at all …. boring, boring and boring – you’ve been warned ….

This review is based on the VHS version, but I will be buying the DVD version!
This is a must see for some people, for who’s life is filled with the dreams of which this movie is made of. Be warned though, this movie does not take itself too seriously, so if you can’t smile and have a laugh (in regards to this topic) don’t watch. For those who both love this topic and haven’t become snobbish this film is a delight. But even with the humor, this film treats the subject of bondage fairly. Those of us who are into this will feel our hearts skip a beat when we see and hear the scene where the Bondage Master coaxes a hesitant model to “feel the ropes, they are the touch of your lover” as he leads her tenderly into the ropes, she does the shoot and in so doing, comes to realize the pleasure for which anyone would aspire to. This scene and so many others assures you that the director is in touch with the subject. Yes, I laughed at the poor Japanese sap that can’t tie a knot, but is totally consumed and in love with the idea of becoming a master himself, being able to effect women the same way. But his victory over the cold boss woman at the end is more then enough to have you buy this film. This film also pays homage and acknowledges the roots of the fantasy film genre where the Bondage Master can use rope like a ninja master can use a sword. That too is well worth the price. And yes, the beautiful women help too. The fetish world of Japan and just seeing a world where people make a living filling fantasies. This has been a long time favorite of mine. If you like film Secretary at all, you’ll probably find yourself enjoying this film just as much.
